An index of the several hundred vintage vehicle photographs featured on the site. Master index of the vintage motoring gallery. The vintage transport photos in this section of the site are now spread over 18 pages. In an attempt to make some kind of sense of them all, I’ve listed them on this one page, in alphabetical order. Some pages feature several different photographs of a vehicle type, whereas in other instances, a variety of photos showing one particular type of car might appear in more than one page. Hopefully this new index of vintage vehicle photos will help visitors to the site find pics of the cars, lorries, coaches or vans that most interest them. Genealogy research If you are researching your family tree or history, and have old photos that show motor-cars that need identification, by all means send them over and I’ll see if I can help out.
Not only is your machine very well-manufactured and, therefore, less likely to give you trouble, but its styling is very aristocratic. I think this combination of factors provides confidence, resulting in a sense of well-being when riding. Distinctive features such as the oilbath chaincase, and the little extras that you get with the Golden range, make the purchase of a Sunbeam an attractive proposition. Veteran bicycles are now going the same way. Your historic vehicle appreciates in value and you can enjoy owning and displaying it at the same time. I particularly like researching the relevant era of each vintage vehicle I own. This is not like the history I was forced to learn at school: Instead I discover social attitudes of the time, issues facing small businesses, how the development of transport liberated people.
Browsing cycling and motorcycling magazines of the time provides much insight into topics of the day. Motoring was in its infancy only years ago.
Frame identification by frame number
In these cases examination of the frame number — where it is, what it is, and how it is, may be of some assistance at least in allowing other specialists to hazard a guess at the true origin of the frame or machine. For example, some BSA frames have BSA and a 3 or 4 figure number cast into the base of the BB, this is just the casting number or perhaps a model number — it is not the frame number. Nervex, the lug maker, also had their name on their BB lugs with a long design serial number. Make a note of where on the BB the number is and its orientation — for example, is it upright or inverted for reading when lifting the front wheel up with the rear wheel still on the ground?

Though perhaps unfamiliar to some CC readers, the Renault 4CV was one of the most European significant cars of the post-war era. It was the first French car to reach 1 million units, it spawned a rather large family of rear-engined models and its engine was in production for 40 years. He waxed lyrical about the little car back at his factory in Billancourt. But soon, the war intervened. By the time he managed to get back to his factory, things had changed quite a bit.
There were now German administrators from Daimler-Benz keeping tabs on the Renault works; Louis Renault found himself sidelined. Some of his engineers were already thinking about the post-war world, however — a world of penury and hardship that could use a very small car. Sometime in the winter of , a clutch of Renault engineers were gathered around a wooden mock-up of this engine, when in crept Louis Renault.

The giant finned Cadillac? But there were contravening voices too—weight is the enemy—and the Studebaker Lark is their ultimate expression. The Lark is the alter-reality mobile of , an American car with a European sensibility. And there were just enough folks who bought into that fairly radical idea in to make the Lark the biggest hit for Studebaker in way too long, as well as their last one ever. It was the first serious attempt by one of the major manufacturers to counter the trend towards ever greater size, weight and power that had taken hold in the early-mid thirties.
Although giving up little or nothing in terms of passenger space and comfort, careful design and engineering created a car that was shorter, and most of all lighter, weighing some 2, lbs, about the same as the Ford Model A.

Electric milk floats come in three wheel and four wheel versions, the latter normally larger. They are very quiet, suiting operations in residential areas during the early hours of the morning or during the night. Most electric milk floats do not have seat belts, and the law in the United Kingdom only requires wearing seat belts where these are fitted in the vehicle. Most of the vehicles operate from the Grandtully Depot in Kelvindale.
Some dairies in the UK, including Dairy Crest , have had to modernise and have replaced their electric milk floats with petrol or diesel fuel -powered vehicles to speed up deliveries and thus increase profit. Manufacturers[ edit ] There were many manufacturers of milk floats in Britain during the 20th century.
